ISC sponsors the Ukrainian Museum of Canada through Community Investment

December 12, 2012

Ken Budzak, VP of Operations and Customer Experience has a family history rich with Ukrainian heritage, but as time and generations pass, holding on to a sense of culture and history becomes more difficult.

Through ISC’s Community Investment program Ken has chosen to support the Ukrainian Museum of Canada for $5,000 through his executive sponsorship. Ken presented a cheque on behalf of ISC to Sonia Mysak, Fundraising Campaign Chair for the museum. The Ukrainian Museum of Canada seeks to acquire, preserve, study and interpret representative artifacts which depict the Ukrainian heritage and its contribution to Canada.

For Ken, his Ukrainian heritage signifies a connection to family, community and the church. Ken is Ukrainian on both sides of his family, with three of his grandparents emigrating from Ukraine. Ken remembers his grandparents having an extremely hard work ethic, but that family was always the most important thing.

“In the evenings, no matter what time of year it always seemed like the house was full of friends and family,” recalls Ken. “Growing up with so many cousins around it never felt like I was an only child.”

While he doesn’t remember a time where he didn’t know English, Ken’s been told that his first language was Ukrainian. It wasn’t until he started school that Ken learnt English. After a few years he lost his fluency but maintained his ability to understand the language from listening to family conversations.

As Ken gets older he feels some regret for not being more involved in his heritage growing up. Ken tries to keep traditions alive with his family and he hopes that ISC’s support of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada will help preserve a part of heritages for Ukrainian Canadian families like his.

“I miss a lot of the Ukrainian traditions that my parents and grandparents established,” says Ken. “I hope that through the museum’s work they are able to rekindle traditions and memories for generations to come.”

The Ukrainian Museum of Canada of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada was founded in 1936 in Saskatoon. It was Canada's first Ukrainian museum and served as a center dedicated to the advancement of the knowledge of and the preservation of Ukrainian heritage in Canada. From its humble beginnings and with much community support the museum has developed into one of Canada's major Ukrainian Collections. For more information on the museum, visit their website

ISC fosters a culture of giving across the province and, through its Community Investment program, ISC contributes 1.5 per cent of net income to support non-profit organizations, community initiatives and diversity programs across the province.
