ISC sponsors White City School through their Community Investment program

October 24, 2012

Information Services Corporation (ISC) has sponsored White City School’s Student Support Services for $5,000. Through ISC’s Community Investment program, members of ISC executive have the opportunity to sponsor organizations important to them, personally or professionally.  President and CEO Jeff Stusek chose White City School, where his niece Finlee attends.

Like most seven-year-olds, Finlee loves to dance, knows all the lyrics to her favourite songs, and loves discovering new things. But because she has Down’s Syndrome, Finlee has some trouble with her speech and her spelling. Since iPad’s are all the rage, it isn’t surprising to see someone Finlee’s age playing with one, but what struck Jeff was how much she was learning.

“I watch her with her iPad and she can do more things on it than I can!” says Jeff Stusek. “Finlee doesn’t just play on it, she learns. There is an App with a goofy cartoon dog on it that repeats everything Finlee says. Finlee got frustrated because the dog was hard to understand, and just with this her speech began to improve, becoming clearer.”

White City School’s Student Support Services decided to use ISC’s investment for purchasing iPads. IPads are the newest and most portable technology system that can provide a variety of opportunities to many diverse needs of children with cognitive disabilities. They were chosen due to their accessibility, interactive capabilities, and because they are fun and motivational for the students.

“White City School has been phenomenal for Finlee,” says Stusek, “she’s the adopted daughter of the school and there isn’t a student or teacher there who doesn’t know her. I’ve seen how much her iPad has helped her, I’ve seen the technology in action and it transcends me and my niece and will help other kids too. I’m proud that ISC can make that little bit of difference by having iPads available to students who could truly benefit from them.”

ISC fosters a culture of giving across the province and, through its Community Investment program, ISC contributes 1.5 per cent of net income to support non-profit organizations, community initiatives and diversity programs across the province.
