Vital Events Snapshot 2009

ISC has released its 2009 Vital Statistics Annual Statistical Report which compiles statistics related to births, deaths and marriage for the calendar year 2009. The report was officially tabled in the Saskatchewan Legislature the week of December 6, 2010.

Among the interesting facts highlighted in the report, are:


  • For the past 5 years, there has been a year-over-year increase in the number of births in the province from 12, 079 in 2004 to 14,525 in 2009.
  • Prior to 2005, births were around 12,000 per year from 1999 to 2004 (fluctuating mildly from year to year).



  • The number of deaths in Saskatchewan decreased from 9,313 in 2008 to 9,060 in 2009, and 2008 also represented the highest number of deaths in the province over the past ten years (the number usually fluctuates around 9,000 people per year).
  • In 2009, the highest cause of death was the general category of cancers of all types with 2,216 total deaths (lung cancer specifically caused the most cancer deaths at 578).  The second highest cause of death was heart disease, with 1,939 deaths



  • The number of marriages decreased from 5,339 in 2008 to 5, 111 in 2009.
  • Meanwhile, the number of divorces increased to 1,976 in 2009 from 1,848 in 2008.
  • When looking at the past ten years, the number of marriages peaked in 1999 with 5,928, and hit another close high of 5,728 in 2000. Marriages have averaged around 5,100 per year since.
