ISC sponsors the South Saskatchewan Cystic Fibrosis Chapter

December 20, 2012

Cystic fibrosis (CF) has been a cause close to Kathy Hillman-Weir’s heart for a number of years, so when she had the opportunity to designate sponsorship dollars as an executive sponsorship through ISC’s Community Investment program, CF was an easy choice.

Kathy Hillman-Weir, VP Corporate Affairs and General Counsel has been touched by cystic fibrosis her whole life. As a baby in the ‘60’s, Kathy was considered to have CF, however it was later determined that she did not. Years later as a young mother, Kathy experienced the anxiety of having her son tested for CF. Most significantly, however, Kathy has seen the impact that CF has had on her cousin April, and their family.

April is now 28 years old and began showing symptoms of cystic fibrosis at only twelve months old.

“Watching April grow up, I’ve seen the impact cystic fibrosis has had on her life, and that of our entire family,” says Kathy.

CF is a multi-organ disease that affects the lungs but also leads to intestinal problems, liver disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis and arthritis, to name a few. Most notably CF affects an individual’s lungs, causing severe breathing issues and damage to lung tissue. In the 1960s, most children with CF did not live long enough to attend kindergarten. Over 50 years later CF diagnostics and treatments have improved significantly, however the median age for mortality is just 26 years old.

“I’m so inspired by April and so admire her kindness, her humour, her courage, and her strength,” says Kathy. “I’m equally inspired by her parents and sister, who have not only gone to great lengths to stay educated about the disease ensure the best care for April, but who are constantly raising awareness about CF and leading significant fundraising events throughout Saskatchewan. Together they are a tremendous force against cystic fibrosis.”

The Ladies Night Out: Dream of a Diamond, Dream of a Cure event was put on by the South Saskatchewan Cystic Fibrosis Chapter to raise funds and awareness about cystic fibrosis. Kathy presented a cheque for $5,000 on behalf of ISC and shared her connection to CF.

“I’m so personally honoured and proud to have the opportunity to help bring awareness to cystic fibrosis,” said Kathy, “and to help bring April and everyone living with CF one step closer to realizing the dream of a cure.
