The History of ISC is Now Online

October 29, 2010

If you have ever wanted to learn more about the history of ISC, you are in the right place!

We have written a whole set of web pages, 21 in all, and published them to this site to help give you a better understanding of how ISC came to be and the history of the Land Titles and Land Survey Systems

The Torrens system (the one that Saskatchewan and other jurisdictions from around the world use to register interests in land) is explained, and so too is the history of how land was granted to early settlers of the province. We have included many historic photos that help tell our story – one that dates all the way back to the 1870s.

The process by which early surveyors painstakingly surveyed the land when there were no roads, power lines or other kinds of infrastructure is also described. The tools they used and the approach they took to measure the land is detailed on these web pages as well.

Some of the most fascinating information about the surveying process is recorded in Field Books – journals that early surveyors used to document everything they saw and every measurement they took.

Field Books are known to contain vivid accounts of the conditions surveyors faced and the personal experiences they had – from having to endure severe weather in remote locations to their general quality of life in the field. Many workers who helped the surveyors deserted soon after they arrived, if they even showed up at all, and there are many of these types of accounts in the thousands of Field Books we maintain in special storage.

We invite you to learn more about how we were formed and how the Land Titles and Land Survey Systems figure so prominently in the history of Saskatchewan.
